Sept. 19, 2017: We are temporarily closed to get our lives together. We apologize for any inconvenience and will be responding to previously submitted materials over the next few months.

We prefer stories and essays that contain fewer than 1,500 words.

Reviews of Things should be under 1,000 words.

If interested in submitting interviews, please first send a query to Jon at jon@kneejerkmag.com.

We accept submissions via Submittable (no PDFs for stories please) or singing telegram only.

Knee-Jerk also accepts comics, illustrations, and other media.

No multiple submissions. Please double-space your manuscripts and avoid FancyFonts. Or glitter.

We do not consider work that has appeared elsewhere. By elsewhere we mean anywhere else.

Yes! We do accept simultaneous submissions, but only if you promise to inform us if your story is accepted elsewhere. We promise to be excited for you.

If you submit via Submittable, which you have to, expect to hear from us in eight (8) to twelve (12) weeks. If you submit via regular mail, expect to wait much, much, much longer. As in, you may be dead before you hear from us.

Please don’t inquire about the status of your submissions. We’ll let you know eventually. Probably.

We cannot accept responsibility for lost or damaged submissions. We accept responsibility for nothing. In fact, we blame you. Not really. But still.

We enjoy first-time online publishing rights. You enjoy telling all your friends that your story’s been published. All other rights regarding further publication belong to the author.

We cannot pay you. We do, however, love you. And need you. Thank you.

We love the visual, so everything is fair game (except photography; there are enough places for photography on the web, and we love them all too, we're just not one of 'em). Send your hilarious, heartbreaking or anywhere in between color or black and white one panel comics or strips, digital illustrations, paintings, etchings, woodcuts, mixed-media pieces, text art, you name it (except, again, no photography). If you are photographing a physical work (the only time photography will be allowed), please crop it as you would like it to appear on the site (like a professional slide; no frames, gallery walls, or spiral notebook fringes). 300 dpi or higher please so it will look pretty on the site.

Be sure to include a brief bio in 3rd person or your work will not be considered.
